Choral Society subscriptions on sale

Subscriptions now are on sale for the Hilton Head Choral Society's 2008-09 concert season, featuring four Full Chorus concerts: aLabor Day weekend pops performance, The Sounds of Christmas, Musical Masterworks and the Memorial Day America Sings! concert.

This year's schedule also includes the premiere of the Festival Invitational, which will bring together select members of the Full Chorus and some of the area's top vocalists for an evening of gospel, pop and classical music. The season also will include a Presents Series performance by British choral group the Swingle Singers.

'Buddy' adds Sunday matinees

"Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story," a show celebrating the life, legend and music of the rock 'n' roll pioneer, continues at the Arts Center this week.

Touted as the world's most successful rock musical (the show ran in London's West End for more than 5,000 performances), "Buddy" is a jukebox show that covers all of his classic hits.

The Arts Center has added 2 p.m. matinee shows on two upcoming Sundays.

The show, which stars Matthew Gray, Jason Yachanin and Scott Moss, continues at

8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays through July 27.

'Beauty' on display on Main Street

The Main Street Youth Theatre's production of "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" continues at 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays from through Aug. 10 at the Main Street Theater, 3000 Main St., Hilton Head Island.

Tickets are $20 for adults,

$10 for students and $15 for groups of 10 or more.

May River Theatre heats up the stage

The May River Theatre will present "Sugar," the musical version of "Some Like It Hot," at 8 p.m. Aug. 15-16, 22-23 and 29-30 and 3 p.m. Aug. 17, 25 and 31 at the Ulmer Auditorium in Bluffton Town Hall at the corner of Bridge and Pritchard streets in Bluffton.

Art Academy offers children's classes

The Art Academy of Hilton Head is offering several classes for children this summer. The next session of "Elements of Art Through Color and Line" for children ages 7 to 12 will be held Saturday mornings Aug. 2 through Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. The class will make landscapes, discuss Impressionism through watercolor and create beach and/or city scenes.

The "Puppet Playshop" for children 6 and up will be held Tuesday afternoons from

2 to 3:30 p.m. through July 29. Participants can make and take a puppet each week. On Aug. 5 and 12, children ages 6 to 12 can learn fun ways to use puppets and tell stories in a back-to-school series. They may make and take their story props. The classes may be taken in a series or for one week.

Elks Lodge hosts charity dinner

The Hilton Head Island Elks Lodge is hosting a Christmas in July Turkey Dinner from

6 to 8 p.m. July 25. Cost is $15 per person; all proceeds go to Victory House in Walterboro.

The following unwrapped items also will be accepted:DVD players, DVDs, personal CD players, CDs, flame-retardant blankets, military items and TV/DVD machines (please no books, clothing or toiletries).

Sunset Cruise benefits Heroes

A Lowcountry Luau Sunset Cruise will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at The Spirit of Harbour Town in Sea Pines. Cost is $75, which includes hors d'ouevres, beer and wine.

Honey Horn hosts 'Apple Pie' painters

The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn will feature the "Apple Pie Painters: Inspired by Honey Horn" in the Hilton Head Regional Healthcare Temporary Exhibit Gallery through Sept 2.

The six original members of the Apple Pie Painters -- Vickie Ebbers, Mary Kelly, John Norlander, Liz Rufenacht, Barb Snow and Peter Hadfalvi -- are celebrating their 10th year of painting together.

The group now numbers nine, with the addition of Marilyn Dizikes, Judy McElynn and Alex Sharma three years ago.

The hours at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Sandbox offering parent/child classes

The Sandbox, An Interactive Children's Museum, offers Parent and Child classes free with admission on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for children 2 1/2 to 4 and their caregivers.

The theme for the month will be Pasta Play days.

The Pasta Play days will be July 23 and July 30. Registration is required. Space is limited.
