DEADLINES
•Dec. 1 is the final day to submit entries for The Photography Club of Beaufort's second annual Dale Westcott Memorial Award. The award will be given to the best nature photo taken by a local high school student.
Westcott was a lifelong educator and nature photographer.
Photos must be at least 8 by 10 inches and mounted or matted on an 11- by 14-inch board. They may be color or black and white, film or digital. Winners ($100 for first place and $50 for second place) will be announced at the Dec. 12 meeting. Details: 843-846-9580.
•Dec. 1 is the deadline for students in fourth through 12th grades to enter two competitions as part of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra's Dream of American season.
The season is built around Peter Boyer's masterwork, "Ellis Island: The Dream of America," a 45-minute work for orchestra, actors and projections, which tells the story of seven immigrants who came to America from 1908 to 1940.
The essay (500 to 1,000 words) and poster (14 by 17 inches) contests should use themes of the students personal or ancestor's Dream of America. BATTERY CREEK HIGH
•Students' artwork will be on exhibit today through Dec. 1 at a Christmas in Beaufort art exhibit at the House of Ahhs at 1109 Boundary St.
Student's artwork was chosen to be used in two series of cards, which will raise money to fund research for breast cancer, and are now selling in various places in Beaufort, such as the House of Ahhs, Bay Street Trading Co., McIntosh Book Shoppe, Carolina Stamper and Spirit of Old Beaufort.

•Dolphin Pride Band Boosters' annual Fruit Sale continues through Nov. 14. Deliveries will be made in the second week of December. All orders are prepaid with checks to BCHS Band Boosters. Navel oranges, juice oranges, tangelos, temple oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, apples, pears and pineapples are available; prices are $13 to $30. Details: 843-322-5580.
•The School Improvement Council is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the media center.
•Operation Christmas Child is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria. Participants are asked to bring Christmas wrapping paper, small stuffed animals, toys (no guns or soldiers), toothpaste, soap, washcloths, crayons, coloring books, pencils, combs, brushes, candy canes, shoe boxes, socks (for all ages) and postcards from our area (not of our military installations).
•The Dolphin Pride Marching Band will perform Saturdayin the Penn Center Heritage Parade.
BEAUFORT ACADEMY
•Kindergarten will visit the Child Abuse Prevention Association at 9 a.m. Monday.
•Washington and Lee University reps will be on campus at 2:45 p.m. Monday.
•Five academy students earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.
Alex Apps and Clay Carey qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and a 3.0 or higher on five or more of the exams.
Tori Spearmam qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor by earning at least a 3.25 GPA on all AP Exams taken, and a 3.0 or higher on four or more of the exams.
Elissa Dailey and Tommy Keane qualified for the AP Scholar by completing three or more AP Examinations with a 3.0 or higher.
BEAUFORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
•There will be no school Monday in observance of Veterans Day.
BEAUFORT HIGH
•Veterans are invited to the annual Veterans Day Assembly at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in the gym. Veterans who plan to attend are asked to call Master Sgt. Terry Rawlins at 843-322-2134 so that they may be recognized. Refreshments will be served after the assembly in the cafeteria.
•The Theater Department has added a children's theater. The first play is "Story Theater," which will be presented by the theater II class. The play is a collection of stories told by the Grim Brothers and Aesop. The show will be presented Friday to St. Peters Catholic and Beaufort Elementary schools. One evening performance is offered at 6 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. Details: 843-322-2152.
BEAUFORT MIDDLE
•The Be Aware News Team is collecting items to send to soldiers. Donations may be left in the school office, including telephone cards (preferably AT&T), individual packs of antibacterial wipes, white socks for men and women, movies, magazines, toiletries and hygiene items for men and women, games (such as checkers or cards), beef jerky (most requested item), any individual snack item, chocolate (since the weather is cooler) and blankets.
•As part of the Middle Years Program, several students participated in Relay for Life and in the Stroll and Roll for Rett to fund research for the Rett Syndrome Research Foundation. The niece of two students, Kaitlyn and Auston Prinsen, suffers from the disease.
•Pressed plant samples and poetry created by 2006-07 eighth-grade science students is now on display at Hunting Island State Park's Nature Center. Additional pressed plants will be on display at the Beaufort County Library this month.
COOSA ELEMENTARY
•The book fair is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and Wednesday. Parents who would like to help with the Book Fair may call 843-322-6100.
•The Scientist-in-Residency: Food Web Discovery classroom presentations, activities and experiments will involve third-graders Thursday and Friday.
•Awards Assemblies are scheduled at 8:45 a.m. Thursday for first-graders, at 9:15 a.m. for kindergarteners and at 2 p.m. for second-graders in the cafeteria.
•School Improvement Council meeting is scheduled at noon Thursday in the Administration Conference Room.
•Monday is the Veterans Day holiday. There will be no school.
JOSEPH S. SHANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
•The First Quarter Achievement Assembly is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Friday for kindergarten through second grades and at 1:30 p.m. for third through fifth grades.
•Students will honor veterans Friday with a program.
•There will be no school Monday in observance of Veteran's Day.

LADY'S ISLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

LADY'S ISLAND MIDDLE
•Rinnah Wolff was the first-place winner of the Red Ribbon Bookmark contest. Austin Thompson placed second place and Amelia Mercado placed third. Honorable mentions were awarded to Caitlin Sedrick Paul Williams, Abby Shelby, Patrick Watson, Ariana Davis and Tyrique Golden.
MOSSY OAKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
•A fall book fair will run through Nov. 13.
•Family Reading Night is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the library.
•Individual pictures will be taken Friday. Prepayment is required.
