• The Junior Service League of Beaufort recently elected its 2008-09 officers. Officers include: Mary Lohr, president; Carson Bruce, vice president; Jennifer Bernard-Allen, treasurer; Amy Kaylor, secretary; Angie Twenge, volunteer hours coordinator; and Lauren Pearson, member-at-large. The mission of the Junior Service League of Beaufort is to give assistance to the needy of Beaufort, render effective volunteer services and to foster interest among the community in the areas of economics, spirituality, municipality and education.

•David Mark Evans, of Burton, a junior at Newberry College, was named to the dean's list for the fall of 2008. A grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required to be named to the dean's list.

•At a recent meeting, president Pat Dunn of The Beaufort Lions Club presented a Melvin Jones Fellow to Kathy Holley, Pat Harvey-Palmer and Pat Sanders.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship honors Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International. It is the highest form of recognition conferred by the foundation.

•Reginald D. Bailey Jr., a son of Regina L. Bailey-Bolden, of Port Royal, was named to the president's list for the third and fourth semester at Morehouse College, Atlanta. Bailey was named to the dean's list for the first and second semester.

A 2007 graduate of Beaufort High School where he was class president, Bailey earn more than $300,000 in college scholarships and a full Navy ROTC scholarship.

•Joshua David Mixson, of Beaufort, was named to dean's list for the fall 2007 and spring semester 2008 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Students who achieve a 3.0 or higher grade point average were named to the list. He is a son of Cindy and David Mack Mixson, of Beaufort, and a graduate of Beaufort Academy.

•Three area students attended Camden Military Academy in Camden:

Cody Gasque, of Beaufort, a son of David and Dana Gasque, a rising junior, received a Gold Star award for two semesters for maintaining a 90 and above average. He also lettered in baseball. He is a grandson of Dora Gasque, of Dillon, and the late Marien Gasque.

Malcolm Singleton, of Bluffton, a son of Jonathan and Myla Mitchell, of Bluffton, a rising junior, received a Gold Star award for two semesters for maintaining a 90 and above average. He is a grandson of Leroy and Frances Hugue, of Rigeland, and Bertha Mitchell, of Bluffton, and Rod and Bea Gregory, of St. Helena Island.

Bryce T. Hill, of Beaufort, a grandson of Thomas and Carolyn Mobley, of Beaufort, rising freshman, was promoted to band company, seargent and lettered in track.

•Megan Leslie Harrell, of Beaufort, graduated from Mary Baldwin College with her degree in Asian studies in Staunton, Va., on May 18.

•Andrew Cheung, a son of Hoi Ming and Siu Yau Cheung, of Beaufort, was named to the dean's list for spring quarter at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haunte, Ind.

He is a mechanical engineering major. To be named to the dean's list, students must earn at least a 3.3 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

•Three area students graduated from Furman University in Greenville May 31. They are Genesis D.Francis and Sheronda N. Witter, of Beaufort, and Paul White, of Yemassee.

•Five area students were named to the dean's list at Savannah College of Art and Design. They are Dorneisha Batson, a fashion major; Deandria Mackey, an animation major; Elizabeth Chase, an architecture major; Glenn Cappelmann, a sound design major; and Travis Walters, a professional writing major.

•Mindy Lee Cavendish, a daughter of Lt. Col. Ron L.and Susan L. Cavendish, of Beaufort, was named to the president's list at Columbia College for the spring 2008 semester. Students who have a grade point average of 4.0 are placed on the president's list.

•Rachel Michael Fleury, of Ridgeland, was named to the dean's list at Columbia College for the spring 2008 semester. Students must have earned a 3.50 grade point average earn this accomplishment.

•June winners from the Beaufort Duplicate Bridge Club.

June 3: 5 tables: North/South; Cliff and Nancy Rhein, first; Doreen Mendenhall and Lillian Collings, second;East/West: Gene Ogden and Harold Collings, first; John Gillies and Lynn Hoos, second; Patti Armstrong and Gene Hanna, third.

June 10: 6 tables: Nancy and Cliff Rhein, first; Joan Simon and Hedy Willson, second;Dinksie Dobbratz and Gene Ogden, third; Doreen Mendenhall and Lillian Collings. fourth; Lynn Hoos and John Gillies, fifth.

June 17: 6 1/2 tables: North South Patty Denier and Nora Johnson, first; Juanita Collings and Rosalind Cochran, second; Cliff and Nancy Rhein, third. East/West: Harold Collings and Gene Ogden, first; John Gillies and Lynn Hoos, second; Hedy Williams and Pat Abell, third.

June 24: 5 tables: North South: Nancy and Cliff Rhein tied with Marcia Meyer and Mary Stag for first/second. Gene Ogden and John Gillies, third. East/West: Sally Horrax and Betsy Walsh, first; Harold and Juanita Collings, second;Paul Yantis and Lib O'Neal, Hedy Williams and Vivian Boyle tied for third, fourth.
