•Students who turned in their Artistic Gifted and Talented applications should have their portfolio or performance pieces ready by Friday.

•Homeroom teachers have information about Community Service and forms for verifying the service.

JOSEPH J. SHANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

•Fifth grade students will visit STARBASE on the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station today and Wednesday. Students will participate in activities such as teamwork, ocean air, forces of flight, physics, computer assisted design, rocket construction and launch, and they will get a base tour.

•The BETA Club will have their ninth Induction Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the multipurpose room.

•Students in first and second grade will visit the Ridgeland Pumpkin Patch Oct. 14 for first grade and Oct. 15 for second grade. The students will leave the school at 9 a.m. and return at 1 p.m.

LADY'S ISLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL

•Eighth grade students will take the Explore Test during homeroom today.

•The volleyball team plays Whale Branch Middle School at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is free.

•The football team plays at 5 p.m. Thursday at Whale Branch Middle School.

•Friday is reward day during related arts time for all students that have returned all of their forms.

•Football and volleyball playoffs start Monday.

•The School Improvement Council and Parent Teacher Organization meets at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 in the media center.

•Students interested in joining a Speed Stacking team can sign up at the front office counter.

ROBERT SMALLS MIDDLE SCHOOL

•Volleyball game against Beaufort Middle School is at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Burton Wells Park.

•A football game against Beaufort Middle School is at 5 p.m. Thursday at Battery Creek High School.

•The Parent Teacher Organization meets at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 in the media center.

•Orange Crush T-shirts are on sale in the main office for $6.

SHELL POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

•Evening Parent Conferences are from 3:45 to 6:45 p.m. today in the classrooms.

•Seahorse Swim Walk-a-Thon is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the back playground area.

•Report cards will be sent home Wednesday.

•An honor roll party is at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria.

THOMAS HEYWARD ACADEMY

•Taylor Sanders has been named a Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal, John D. Rogers Jr.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

•The school has opened a new art department, teaching grades kindergarten through high school. Kindergarten through first grades concentrate on learning the basic principles of art, second grade focuses on art projects from around the world, third grade learns about important artists, while fourth through sixth grades complete projects focusing on art history. High school develops art appreciation and studio skills.

The department is directed by Carmen Pinckney, who has worked at the McKissick Museum in Columbia.
