The Prince George's County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., invites high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a 2.0 GPA to participate in a chaperoned tour of 15 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Saturday through Nov. 15.

Students can explore the academic, cultural, and social advantages offered at some of the nation's most prestigious HBCUs. College admissions staff will be available to respond to admission criteria, financial aid resources, courses of study, and more. Planned visits to Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia will include guided tours of Bennett, Morehouse and Spelman Colleges and Clark Atlanta, Elizabeth City, Hampton, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T State, Johnson C. Smith, Winston-Salem State, North Carolina Central, and South Carolina State Universities and more.

Battery Creek High School

•Dolphin Pride Band Boosters annual fruit sale continues through Nov. 21. Deliveries will be Dec. 10. All orders are prepaid with checks being payable to Battery Creek High School Band Boosters. Navel oranges, juice oranges, tangelos, temple oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, apples, pears, pineapples and gift boxes are for sale from $13 to $28. Details: 843-322-5580 or 843-322-5570.

•Students will participate in Operation Christmas Child at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria. Students are asked to bring Christmas wrapping paper, small stuffed animals, toys (no guns or soldiers), toothpaste, soap, washcloths, crayons, coloring books, pencils, combs, brushes, candy canes, sheoboxes, socks (for all ages) and postcards from our area, but not of our military installations.

•Athletic Booster Club meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the school cafeteria.

•The Dolphin Pride Band Booster Club meeting is at 5:30 p.m. in the band room Nov. 11. All athletes, coaches, parents, guardians and faculty/staff members are encouraged to join the athletic booster club.

Beaufort Academy

•Nine students at Beaufort Academy earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.

At Beaufort Academy, nearly 10 percent of the high school students earned designations as AP Scholar: One student -- Tommy Keane -- qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Eight students -- Kaitlyn Becker, Mike Beckwith, Elissa Dailey, Mary Whit Danielson, Bryce Ferry, Richard Malinowski, Kelsey Rentz and Keaton Speights -- qualified for the AP Scholar by completing three or more AP Examinations, with grades of 3 or higher.

Beaufort High School

•Students are preparing for a "Passage to India" cultural festival from 8:30 am. to noon Thursday in the school's small gym. Students, and community members, are invited to find a new understanding of the sights, sounds and beauty of the Indian way of life.

As part of the festivities, Lori Lundgaard's World Religion class will present a portion of the Hindu wedding ceremony. National Art Honor Society members will offer traditional henna (temporary) tattoos, which are also a part of the Indian wedding tradition.

Dance students are learning time-honored dance moves for the festival. They will demonstrate their prowess, and then ask visitors to take part in the dancing. A sari fashion show will enlighten visitors about this iconic female attire in the Indian tradition.

This project is partially funded through a grant from the Arts Council of Beaufort County with funds from the City of Beaufort and SC Arts Commission through the NEA.

Beaufort Middle School

•Parents should ask students for the Friday Facts sheet.

•Homeroom teachers have information about Community Service and forms for verifying the service.

Lady's Island Middle School

•There is no school today due to Election Day. The office will be open.

•The chorus is performing Friday at Penn Center.

•The school will be closed Nov. 11 for the Veteran's Day. No offices are open at school on Nov. 11.

•Forms for the American Education Week lunch are due back at the school this week.

•Students interested in joining a Speed Stacking team can sign up at the front office counter.

Mossy Oaks Elementary School

•A Family Fun Festival is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Beaufort Middle School. The Mossy Oaks Parent Teacher Organization will host a family event featuring Shannon Tanner, a performer who travels all over the world. Concessions and student performances are included.

•The fall book fair is Monday through Nov. 20 in the main hallway. Proceeds from the fair to to the school's library book collection.

Robert Smalls Middle School

•Football players, parents and coaches are selling discount cards which feature 15 area businesses. The $10 purchase of each card supports the school's athletic department.

•The PTO will hold "Dough Raiser"fundraiser 5-8 p.m, Monday at Pizza Inn. Volunteers are needed to work in the dining room during the appointed time. Please contact a PTO board member to sign up or the school front office. Also, the group will sell tickets to attend Belk's 20-50 percent storewide sale on Nov.15. The cost of the tickets is $5.

•There will be a school-wide annual Veteran's Day Program at 9 p.m. Monday. The Battery Creek JROTC will be presenting the Colors.

Shanklin Elementary School

•Shanklin Elementary will host its first Achievement Awards dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday . Students earning all A's (Principal's Honor Roll) and "A-B's" Honor Roll will receive a certificate and an honor roll pencil.

•The third graders of Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary School will present a tribute to our veterans through music and poetry at 2:30 p.m. Friday. During the program, students will sing patriotic song, including a tribute to the branches of the military.

•Students will not attend school Nov. 11.

Shell Point Elementary School

• There is no school for students today due to Election Day.

•Primary MAP Testing for kindergarden through first grades is throughNov. 18.

•ITBS/CoGAT Testing for second grade only is through Nov. 18.

Thomas Heyward Academy

•Children across the country made history this month by participating in the third annual Jumpstart's Read for the Record Campaign. This campaign created the world's largest shared reading experience as participants read this year's official campaign book, "Corduroy," written by Don Freeman and published by Penguin Young Readers Group. With entries still being tabulated, Jumpstart's Read for the Record Campaign has broken the world record for the largest shared reading experience with more than 400,000 readers registered. Fourth grade teacher Karen Creech reported 11 teachers, special guest reader Margaret Davis and 199 students from THA participated in this special national event.

•The Parent Teacher Organization of Thomas Heyward Academy presented the school library with a $938 check for the purchase of a projector for power-point presentations, as well as a presentation stand. These items had been on the "wish list" for the faculty and library. Teachers will now be able to create presentations for use in their classrooms, and will also be able to teach students how to create their own.
