•The Beaufort Art Association presents a special exhibition of artworks by members of the Charleston Artist Guild, which will open today and continue through Nov. 29. A reception will be held for the artists at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday

The Beaufort Art Association Gallery, 1001 Bay St., in the historic Elliott House, features the works of 80 member artists, including paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylic, works in collage, pastel, photography, glass, jewelry, wood, and notecards. •Storytime sessions, for ages 3 to 7, are at 3 p.m. on Mondays through Dec. 1 at the Lobeco Branch of the Beaufort County Library.

•The Heritage Society of Beaufort will hold its annual barbecue and silent auction for members and friends Thursday at the home of president Bill Culp, 2208 Bay St.

A social hour will commence at 5:30 p.m. followed by a barbecue dinner catered by Debbi Covington. Live music also will be performed by local musicians.

The HSOB is an umbrella organization supporting six National Heritage Groups meeting in Beaufort. The event raises funds that are distributed to each of the following organizations in support of their Beaufort County Historical programs. Friends of Beaufort's history are encouraged to attend and those interested in membership should contact the leaders of their respective organizations. The cost is $25. Details: 843-522-3530.

•The University of South Carolina Beaufort Roges & Vacaboundes will perform "Shakespeare, Merrily the Good Parts" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the USCB Performing Arts Center, 801 Carteret St.

The play is an original compilation of scenes from Shakespeare's famous plays. The performance follows a group of travelers returning from London who perform for their father their favorite scenes from the plays they witnessed.

•Penn Center's 26th annual Heritage Days Celebration is Thursday through Saturday on St. Helena Island.

This year's theme, "Promoting Tolerance in a Changing World," will be presented by a panel of special guest speakers, including artist Jonathan Green, of Florida, actress Kerry Washington, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, an Atlanta comedian and actor, and author Heyward Inabinett, of St. Helena Island, who will discuss different attitudes of intolerance in America today.

The 2008 Artist of the Year, Amiri Geuka Farris, of Savannah, will be featured in an opening exhibition and reception at 5 p.m. Thursday.

A main event will be the Heritage Days Symposium and Sea Island Breakfast, which will feature an exhibit and lecture entitled "Discover Bunce Island: An 18th Century British Slave Castle" held to commemorate the 200th bicentennial of the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade by the U.S. government. The symposium is from 8 a.m. to noon Friday at St. Helena Elementary School, Sea Island Parkway, St. Helena Island.

Food will be served for school groups on "Kids' Day" Friday along with performers like Aunt Pearlie Sue, step teams, crafts demonstrations, Lady's Island Middle School Chorus, and the Sankofa Traveling Museum-on-Wheels. The evening will end with a fish fry, oyster roast, crab crack and blues, featuring live music by Doctor Patch Enterprise Band from 6 to 11 p.m.

On Saturday, all-day festivities begin with the Heritage Days Parade at 9 a.m. on Sea Island Parkway from St. Helena Elementary School to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Center stage performances, the Old Fashion Craft Fair, the Sankofa Museum-on-Wheels and the Gullah Roots Village round out the day.

•An opening reception for the Veterans Art Show is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Artworks, the home of the Arts Council of Beaufort County, 2127 Boundary St. in the Beaufort Town Center. Third-grade students from Shanklin Elementary School, led by Benjamin Morgan, will perform.

The exhibit will be open through Nov. 11. The art will be moved to the Beaufort National Cemetery Nov.11 for display during the Veterans Day Ceremony. Work will not be for sale and the artist must be a veteran.

•Songwriter, Bonita Wreden will conduct a Songwriters Workshop at at 6 p.m. Friday at the Campenella Studio of the Arts.

The cost is $60 and will include her newly released compact disc, "Sky Songs." This easy listening CD includes songs for a cleaner environment, songs of motherhood and some jazz and blues songs.

•The Classic Car & Truck Club of Beaufort will have their monthly Cruise In at 6 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Grayco Hardware, 136 Sea Island Parkway on Lady's Island.

•A poetry reading and book signing by Karen M. Peluso, of Beaufort, poet-in-residence at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, is at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Magnolia Barbados Tropical Room (Conservatory), 3550 Ashley River Road, Charleston.

A South Carolina Poetry Initiative chapbook contest winner and author of "The Mother-Face in the Mirror," Peluso's residency has inspired her new book of poems titled "Magnolia Plantation: A Journey."

•The Lowcountry Estuarium -- A Coastal Learning Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with creature feedings at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. The estuarium is open on other days by appointment.

Meetings and Clubs

•The Public Speaking & Leadership Club meeting is at 5:30 p.m. todayin the Lowcountry Medical Center Community Room, Port Royal.

Deadlines

Today is the final day to register for the Experiments in Printmaking without a Press, a part of the Serious Play Workshop Series for Adults, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at ARTWorks, 2127 Boundary St.

Wednesday is the final day for acceptance of male and female models, age 18 and older, for Carael's Lowcountry Modeling Show. The rehearsal is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lady's Island Middle School.

•Beaufort Women's Center Walk for Life begins at 9 a.m. Saturdayat Belleview Business Park, 25-B Marshellen Drive. Registration for the two-mile walk begins at 8:30 a.m. The walk is from 9 to 10 a.m.
