Be a king or queen for the day Visit Beaufort's 'Castle'
Want to tour a castle? Or, rather, "The Castle"?
Beaufort County Open Land Trust will host two private tours and an oyster roast at the newly renovated, historic home, The Castle, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
Visitors will be granted access to this historic home and see first hand the only extensive renovations to be made in 20 years. Guests will see an updated, marble kitchen, three new marble bathrooms and an entirely new kitchen that was added to the ground floor. The floors have been completely stripped and waxed, the walls freshly painted and the original paint restored on the doors. All are now restored to their original condition.
Being understated was really the point, according to Beekman Webb, the contractor for the previous renovations 20 years ago and for the current changes today. Webb's instructions from owners Sandy and Kreis Beall were to get the house looking as it might have looked in the mid-19th century but with the addition of modern conveniences. According to Webb, when the renovations and restorations are complete, "The Castle will look better than it ever has."
The owners have yet to move into The Castle, so guests will have the unique opportunity to see the house without furniture or personal belongings.
Built in 1859 by Dr. Joseph Johnson, The Castle remained in the family until the 1970s. It is the only home in Beaufort that is completely brick, including the interior walls. The Castle also is one of the few houses in Beaufort for which there exists an original contract for construction, detailing original plans, costs and contractor names.
The tours include an old-fashioned oyster roast and live music in the expansive gardens. The cost is $75 a person. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Beaufort County Open Land Trust whose mission is to preserve and protect open vistas and historic green space in Beaufort County.
