Paris Genici Avery is charged with homicide by child abuse for the August 2006 death of her 18-month-old son, Ra'Saan Cortez Avery Young. Monday, a jury was selected to hear the case, with the trial expected to begin today at 9:30 a.m., according to the Solicitor's Office.
Avery is accused of giving her son too much anti-itch prescription medication the child was taking to treat eczema. A toxicology report showed that the infant died of acute hydroxyzine intoxication.
Investigators determined that Avery had been the only one to give her son the medication.
She faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted.
