The Jasper County School Board will pay the same amount to fund repairs at the vocational academy, which serves students from both counties.
The vocational academy's board approved an $8.9 million renovation plan Nov. 20 that will add classroom space and make repairs to the 30-year-old building. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2009.
The renovation plan, by Atlanta-based construction firm Heery International, calls for $5.9 million to be spent on repairs and $3 million on a 12,000-square-foot addition.
The school board also reviewed increased costs for running tracks at Lady's Island and Robert Smalls middle schools at its meeting.
Both tracks were added to the school projects list in fiscal year 2006, but Phyllis White, the district's chief operational services officer, said no planning or design work had been done before the items were approved.
The cost at Lady's Island Middle School has increased from an original budget of $33,000 to resurface an existing track to $351,000 to build a full-sized 400-meter track.
The original budget for a football field and track at Robert Smalls Middle School was $165,000. Difficulty in finding a location for the track and increased construction cost has increased estimates to more than $500,000.
"The overall (project) budget is not going to be exceeded," White said. "Just these two line items."
