A Battery Creek High School honor roll student died early Sunday morning in a one-car crash on U.S. 21 in Burton.
Shakira Legare, 16, of Beaufort, was killed when the 1999 Ford Expedition she was driving flipped multiple times. Two passengers were uninjured.
Cpl. Paul Brouthers of South Carolina Highway Patrol said Legare may have fallen asleep at the wheel and alcohol was not suspected. The accident occurred at about 3:05 a.m. near the Enmark gas station at 3076 Trask Parkway.
Legare's sister, Tika Legare, 20, and another Beaufort resident, Leorian Grant, 16, were in the SUV at the time of the crash.
Legare was driving south on U.S. 21 when the Expedition yawed sideways, overturned and went off the right side of the road, Brouthers said. She was not wearing a seat belt.
One of the vehicle's occupants needed to be extricated by emergency workers; it wasn't clear which one. Paramedics administered advance life support on the scene before Legare was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where she died.
Grant also is on the honor roll at Battery Creek High School.
