The sweep is South Carolina's largest, one-day litter cleanup of beaches, marshes and waterways and is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup.
So far, volunteers have committed to cleanup more than 60 different sites in the state. None is in Beaufort County, though organizers are encouraging people to step up and coordinate sweeps for sites not on the list. Anyone can participate and all supplies are provided.
Last year more than 6,000 volunteers removed 57 tons of debris, covering 1,345 miles of environmentally sensitive areas. In its 19-year history, 942.5 tons of litter have been collected and recycled when possible.
To volunteer, contact Susan Ferris Hill of the Sea Grant Consortium at 843-953-2092 or susan.ferris.hill@scseagrant.org, or Bill Marshall of the Department of Natural Resources at (803) 734-9096 or marshallb@dnr.sc.gov.
