Almost $2 million for 20 acres was included in April's $162.7 million bond referendum for land for a Lady's Island elementary school. But district officials said they await updated enrollment projections before making a final decision. The school board voted to spend up to $30,000 last month to have Associated Planning & Research update enrollment projections it gave to the board in July 2007 as part of a large, five-year facilities plan.
The district also wants to see what the district's new programs dedicated to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will do, board Chairman Fred Washington Jr. said. The district plans to move Lady's Island Elementary School's fifth- and sixth-graders to Lady's Island Middle School next year and shift the school's curriculum. A similar program began last month at Whale Branch Middle School.
The district also opened a STEM program for gifted and talented students at Beaufort Elementary School. Students in crowded schools, such as Coosa Elementary School, could move to STEM schools, negating the need for a new school on Lady's Island, Washington said.
