On Monday, the first day for schools on the traditional calendar, 12,240 students showed up for school, down from the first day last year when 12,564 showed up, according to district data.
Enrollment numbers are fluid through the year, however, and tend to increase as the school year progresses. On the last day of school last year, the district recorded 12,735 students, almost 250 more than the first day.
It also was the first day all district schools were in session. The number of students at year-round schools also have risen considerably from 5,876 on July 30 -- the first day of year-round --to 6,265 on Monday.
Fifteen schools operate on a traditional calendar, and 13 use year-round.
