Toyne captures Parris Island Bowling Club championship

Jeff Toyne captured his third Parris Island Bowling Club championship with a smashing 238-212 victory over Mike Pernell from a field of 45 bowlers in the April 12 tournament at Ribaut Lanes. Pernell was the top qualifier for the day and waited in the wings while the rest of the field worked their way through the elimination matches to vie for the title.
Ben Duncan and Karen Buck from the first shift, along with Sa'mi Hardy, Jeff Toyne, Greg Mikel, Greg Bowers and high scratch non-qualifier John Walton (635) from the second shift, squared off to battle in the roll-offs. Duncan took home eighth-place honors while Buck finished seventh, Bowers sixth and Hardy fifth.
Toyne bested Mikell and Walton with nine strikes in the semifinal game for a sterling 245 game to advance to the finals with Walton (197) finishing in fourth and Mikell (209) third.
Toyne was definitely on a torrid streak as he lined up against his upstart senior competitor in the finals. He was ready to show that youth would prevail over experience, despite the 25 pin handicap difference. It was just a matter of time.
In the championship match, Toyne had Pernell on the ropes early as he thoroughly outclassed him with a barrage of strikes and spares while Pernell left the door wide open with a miss in the second frame and could never recover. From then on, it was lights out as Toyne had a 30 pin lead by the fifth frame and then closed with a "hambone" from the seventh frame to the 10th to secure the title by a 26-pin margin.
In the Mystery Doubles, Pernell and Toyne joined forces to take the first shift doubles with a 889 while Tom Yuhas/Ben Duncan were second and Hawk Lewis/Karen Buck were third at 834. In the second shift, John Walton teamed up with Tonja McAllister and Neecie Toyne paired up with Cory Sikes to tie at 890 for the top honors while Jeff Toyne and Lou Brown took second place at 881.
The PIBC gathered in nine renewals and three new members (Paul Bailey, Lou Brown, Steve Borynski) to swell their ranks to 47 active members.
The next PIBC tournament will be on June 14 at Parris Island Lanes.
Strikes & Spares
• Results of the Challenge Cup match between the Charleston Seniors and the Beaufort Seniors held last Friday at Ribaut Lanes will be covered in next week's column.
• Jim Bollack turned in his first 700 series since his return to bowling after an eight-year absence with a big 710 (242-246-222) in the Tuesday Night Mixed.
• Justin Smith bowled his third career 300 game last Monday night in the Money Madness at Victory Lanes with games of 207-223-300=730.
• Saturday is the deadline for entry in the South East Bowling Association tournament in Chattanooga to be held on May 23 through June 29.
• Several Beaufort bowlers will be traveling to Augusta, Ga., to bowl in the 250 Masters tournament on Saturday. Good luck to you all.
• The end of the fall bowling season is fast approaching and there are a few bowlers who still don't get the picture about paying their weekly bowling fees. You can be suspended from bowling for non-payment. That is a long drawn-outprocedure, so why not make it simple for everyone and just pay your bowling fees like 99.9 percent of all bowlers do. Any funds you still owe will be deduced from the team's winnings at the final payout. Do yourself and the bowling community a great big favor and quit bowling. We don't want you and we don't need you. Good bye and good riddance.
• Bowlers like to groan and moan and complain. That is the bowler's nature, it seems. We don't complain too much when Mother Nature changes the weather pattern, but change the oil pattern on the lanes and you would think an earthquake had just hit the lanes. Bowlers blame the manager, the head mechanic, the lane oiling machine and just about everyone else associated with the bowling center. Bad words, bad words.
Bowlers have become adjusted to the same bowling center and the same lane conditions and the same atmosphere, noise, color scheme and more so that when things change or it is time to go somewhere else to bowl, they fold under the "strange and awful" new lane conditions they were faced with.
Yep, sometimes problems do exist at the lanes that did perhaps change things for a day or two until it was fixed. Goodness knows, the head mechanic certainly knows his equipment (lane dressing machine, etc). No one intentionally breaks the equipment or makes it not work. Does your car always work all the time? Probably needs a little tweaking and peaking from time to time. That is called preventive maintenance. Same thing happens at the bowling center. No one intentionally messed things up for the bowlers. But things do happen.
Bowlers threaten to write to the regional manager or anyone higher above the local manager and threaten to quit if they don't fix the problem "right now." What is the solution? Everyone has the answer, but no one seems to be willing to listen or analyze the extent of the problem. Perhaps it is as easy as ... good bowlers learn to adjust and take what is given them, while others complain. Which category do you fit in?
We all need to quit blaming everyone else and take some responsibility for our own actions. Yes, we buy our bowling equipment that fits our needs, but not every ball you buy fits every situation all the time. We have to go back to the basics and work out our problems and learn to smile again. That isn't easy for some of us hard-headed ol' geezers, right? Smile, you're on candid camera! And don't forget that bowling is fun. A bad day at bowling beats a good day at work! Go have fun.
• The next Gutter Chatter column will be coming to you from Chandler, Ariz., where I am attending my 55th high school class reunion. They are so glad to see me they are having it on my birthday! I will return on May 4.
