LOBO beats out BP for Prime Timers title
mikep700@charter.net
Bob Culp and Lois Cochrane teamed up as LOBO to win the Prime Timers league championship on Tuesday by a 11.5 game margin over BP (Marvin Bailey & Curtis Pauling).
They added Ellen Richardson and James Jenkins to their combo to become Easy Does It on Thursday outing in the VIP Senior league to win that championship by a four-game bulge over Lucky 13 (Paul Kasperski, Maria Pringle, Bill Pringle, Shirley Kasperski, Jim Bollack).
Culp is fast making a name for himself as the hottest new bowler in the senior leagues, winning Most Improved honors in both leagues by increasing his average +18 pins in the Prime Timers from a 150 to 168 and a whopping +23 in the VIP Seniors, going from 142 to 165. Cochrane also increased her average +2 pins in the Prime Timers to finish at 131 as the dynamic duo went on a hot streak over a three month streak to virtually wrap up the title as far back as mid January. They were unstoppable and it was just a matter of staying the course to the end of the season to claim their title.
Bring It On (Ethel Ladson & George Ladson) finished in third place just one half game ahead of Slo Mo (H.F. Capps & Karl Waldhauer) with Robbet (Robert Smith & Betty White) taking fifth place honors among the 13 teams in the Prime Timers.
Taking season high average honors in the Prime Timers were Roy Nygaard (206) and Barbara Tapio (155). Karl Waldhauer (736) and Luella Collins (719) captured the handicap series honors while handicap game honors went to Ben Green (292) and May Bell Hayes (179). Scratch series laurels went to Nygaard (738) and Gardenia White (555) with scratch game honors to Tom Yuhas (257) and Barbara Tapio (233). Most Improved honors went to Culp (+18) and May Bell Hayes (+5).
Team honors for handicap game went to Bowling Buddies (471) with handicap series going to Joy (1270). Scratch game went to BP (346) with JO-TO taking scratch series (981).
In the VIP Seniors, the champions swept Kasper (Jim Blue, Dick Belcourt, Jim Weatherill, Norman Jagde) on the final day to erase any doubt as to their superiority and knocked them down to third place, enabling Lucky 13 to move into second place. The Dragons (Loraine Ferguson, Lois Cable, Carolyn Bessinger, Lori Hooper) finished in fourth place with Late Starters (Theresa Pringle, Evelyn Washington, Harold Rivers, James Pollock) just one half game in back to gather in fifth place among the 20 teams in the league.
Taking the individual honors for high average were Roy Nygaard (200) and Neva Smith (163). Handicap game honors went to Norman Jagde (296) and Ethel Ladson (285) with Lionel Cabaniss (745) and Lori Hooper (733) taking the series honors. Scratch game went to Jim Blue (266) and Gail Workman (216) with Tom Yuhas (686) and Neva Smith tied with Lori Hooper (586) for scratch series. Most Improved honors went to Culp (+23) and Pat Sanders (+10).
Team honors for handicap series went to Gamblers (2625) with Dragons (935) taking the handicap game laurels. Scratch team honors go to Kasper (2162) with We're Back taking the scratch game honors.
Both leagues will hold their prize money/awards this week and then begin summer league action on the following week, May 20 for Prime Timers at 1 p.m. and May 22 for VIP Seniors, also at 1 p.m.
Congratulations to the league champions and all winners and a special "atta-boy" to Bob Culp.
Strikes & Spares
• I'm back on-line after a week's absence to attend my 55th high school reunion in Chandler, Ariz., and then a week in the cool mountains in Pinetop. I had a super time, and now it's back to the lanes just in time for the end of the season.

• The Lowcountry USBC held their final meeting last week before taking a two month break for the summer. Outgoing President Paul Cole expressed his thanks to all the board members for their help and support during his three years as President, especially during the transition from ABC/WIBC to the present USBC. Cole cited expanding business commitments as the main reason for not remaining on the board as a director. There are two additional openings on the board with the resignation of Tiger and Angela Fulkert as directors. Anyone who is interested in joining the board should contact Lenny Avery.
• The winter season is fast approaching the end of another exciting year of bowling. Now is time to focus on the upcoming summer session. The league sign up sheets are available at the bowling centers and are put there for you to use. When you fill them out and turn them in, it lets the league secretary, and also the bowling center manager, know how many teams are going to bowl when the league begins. There are leagues for all ages, from the Generation Gap to the Senior citizens with ranges of skills/talents for bowlers of all levels. There is also a scratch doubles league. Summer leagues are short and always a lot of fun. Grab a partner or come on out to the organizational meeting and get ready for another fun filled season. Please sign up early to help get things rolling smoothly for the start of the season. Thanks.
