Beaufort baseball team runs out of steam against J.L. Mann
For five innings Chris Waters pitched like the ace of the Beaufort staff, shutting down the J.L. Mann offense.
But in one inning, all that changed. The Patriots put up four runs in their half of the sixth inning, propelling them to a 4-2 victory over the Eagles on Wednesday afternoon. After allowing back-to-back singles to Paul Nitto and Brent Vogel, Waters walked the next hitter before beaning the following batter, both forcing in runs. By the time the damage was done, J.L. Mann carried a 4-1 lead.
Beaufort answered with a run in the sixth but Alex Richard was stranded on third base to end the inning. The Eagles again brought the tying run to the plate when Waters walked, but couldn't make a rally of it, and Ben Sauls flew out to right field to end the game.
Richard provided Beaufort with its only two hits on the day. Kyle Owings went the distance for J.L. Mann in a complete-game victory.
"Chris was throwing a great game and I think he ran out of gas there in the sixth," Beaufort High coach Brook Dixon said. "He gave us five strong innings of work. Their pitcher threw a good game. He was spotting his pitches and kept us off balance. On the positive side, Chris threw well and our defense made the routine plays.""
Beaufort (2-9) plays in today's seventh-place game against Pendleton at 10 a.m. in the tournament.

Whitney Sewell hit home runs in the first and third innings, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs, leading the Rebels to victory.
"She's a good athlete," Thomas Heyward coach Camillo Trapuzzano said. "She's a very good offensive player, but she's also a very good defensive player. We've got her playing shortstop right now, but she's a tremendous centerfielder. She also pitches for us; she's all-around."
Jordan Moser was 2-for-3. Madeline Cassady had a double and two RBIs. Megan Carroll had a hit and two RBIs. Lynn Malphrus and Morgan Day each had a hit and an RBI.
Jessica Jaskiwicz was the winning pitcher, allowing a hit and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings.
"We had good pitching today and great offense," Trapuzzano said. "We put everything together today."
Thomas Heyward (7-3, 1-0) will travel to Bible Baptist for a 4 p.m. game on Friday.
