Battery Creek 78, Military Magnet 32: Senior center April Meyer picked up where she left off last season, scoring a game-high 18 points to lead Battery Creek over Military Magnet in the first round of the Mazzanna's Lawn Service BC Classic at Battery Creek High School.
"We're hoping it's going to be a special year," Battery Creek coach Wilbert Bryant said. "Tonight, we took our first step. I was very proud of how the girls responded, stayed focused and put the game away."
Katrece Daniels had 18 points, Rebekka Jones had nine and Kierra Wright added nine. Sarah Rivers paced Military Magnet with 13. The Dolphins led 40-16 at halftime.
Battery Creek (1-0) will face Goose Creek in the second round of the tournament at 6 p.m. Friday at Battery Creek High School. Goose Creek defeated Colleton County in the first round 48-36.
Box Hill (Australia) 67, Hilton Head Prep 31: One of Australia's best teams sent the Dolphins to their second loss of the young season.
Prep outscored Box Hill 14-7 in the second quarter, but the squad from Melbourne -- on a 10-game visit to the United States -- had little trouble besides that.
"We played poorly, and we're still short-handed," said Prep coach Bob Sulek.
Kathleen Blum had 13 points and five steals to lead the way for Prep (0-2). Becky DeRose scored 12 points, Jamese Franklin had a team-high 10 rebounds and Chris Quinn added six boards.
The Dolphins now have more than a week off, returning to action Dec. 5 at home against Hammond School.
