The Wade Hampton High School boys team must have felt like a frustrated fisherman trying to reel in a big bass Friday night at The Palace.
Every time the Red Devils got their hook into a comeback, Battery Creek would escape off the line.
The Dolphins jumped out to a quick start and never looked back to advance to the boys championship game of the Mazzanna's Lawn Service BC Classic with a 58-49 win.
Battery Creek will face Burke at 8:30 p.m. in the championship game after Burke defeated Beaufort High 77-54.
Javari Albergotti's 3-pointer capped a 7-1 first-quarter run that gave Battery Creek an early eight-point lead.
Wade Hampton pulled within three in the second quarter before the Dolphins closed the quarter on a 10-3 run to re-assert their dominance.
"We played well in stretches," Battery Creek coach John Drafts said. "I was pleased with the way we started the game. I think we play our best in the fullcourt. Our halfcourt defense and offense need some work."
Albergotti and Brent Evans expanded the lead to 16 with a couple of 3-point baskets to start the second half. But Battery Creek couldn't keep the Red Devils from making a comeback.
A 10-0 Wade Hampton run pulled the Red Devils within six.
"We came to play (in the second half)," Wade Hampton coach Shelby Strother said.
C.J. Brown stopped the Red Devils' run and dropped in an uncontested layup before the horn to give the Dolphins a 41-33 lead heading into the final frame.
Battery Creek appeared to be in control after an Albergotti layup and a Chris Thomas 3-pointer put the Dolphins up 52-39, but Wade Hampton's Jeremy Ford was starting to get heated up.
The Dolphins had kept the clamps on Ford for most of the game, but he contributed nine points to an 11-1 run shrunk Battery Creek's lead to five in the final minutes.
But the Red Devils got only one more point off a free throw as the Dolphins made three from the charity stripe to ice the win.
Evans and Brown led the Dolphins with 14 points each. Evans also added 13 rebounds.
"We just have good team chemistry," Evans said. "I just want to win the games."
Evans' length proved to be a burden for the Red Devils all night. While the rangy forward only connected on one 3-point shot, he had open looks all night over Wade Hampton's shorter defenders.
Drafts chalks up Evans' shooting struggles to fatigue.
"I think at the end, he just worn down," Drafts said.
Ford led all scorers with 17. Jeremy Holmes added 10 for the Red Devils.

GAMES AT ROBERT SMALLS MIDDLE SCHOOL
Estill 52, Beaufort High girls 49: Jamiee Isham scored a game-high 27 points and Estill took advantage of 25 Beaufort High turnovers for a second-round win in the Mazzanna's Lawn Service BC Classic at Robert Smalls Middle School.
The Eagles held a seven-point lead late in regulation, but four straight defensive lapses led to Estill layups at the other end. Beaufort High cut the lead to one point with 15 seconds left and Estill missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but the Eagles missed a block out. Estill got the rebound and scored the game-winning basket.
"We had a lot of missed opportunities in the lane," Beaufort High coach Jerry Hickey said.
Kristian Ramsey led the Eagles with 12 points. Rebecca Tkach had eight and Kentura Carpenter finished with seven.
Beaufort High (0-2) will face Military Magnet in the final round of the tournament at 10 a.m. today at Battery Creek High School.
Burke 77, Beaufort High boys 54: Sidney Sanders scored 19 points as Burke handed Beaufort High its first loss of the young season.
The Eagles fell behind 25-6 in the first quarter and never were able to recover.
"We didn't do a good job of protecting the basketball," Beaufort High coach Bruce Beasley said. "Burke does a lot of trapping, and at times, we didn't do a good job negotiating it."
Malcolm Volitaire paced the Eagles with 12 points, followed by Xavier Fields with 10 and Michael Ginn with eight. Dexter Jackson and Robert Turral each contributed seven.
Beaufort High (1-1) will face Wade Hampton at 5:30 p.m. today in the final round of the tournament at Battery Creek High School.
