The Sand Sharks' men and women earned top-10 spots when the first NAIA golf rankings of the season were released Tuesday, marking the first time any USCB teams have been ranked in the top 25 in a national poll. The men's cross country team received votes earlier this season but did not crack the top 25.
USCB coach Shane LeBaron said he hopes the national recognition gives his players some extra motivation heading into the spring season.
"We're far from done, as far as where we want to be and where we plan to go," LeBaron said. "This is a good start."
USCB's men made quite a splash during the fall season, winning the Wilmington Island Club Intercollegiate and their own J. Lindeberg Sand Shark Classic. As a result, they received one first-place vote and 389 points, good enough for the No. 5 national ranking. The Sand Sharks are the highest-ranked team in the Sun Conference, five spots ahead of rival Savannah College of Art and Design. The University of British Columbia is ranked No. 1 with 461 points.
The Sand Shark women also cracked the top 10, earning 276 points and a No. 10 ranking, which makes them the second-highest ranked Sun Conference team behind No. 2 Embry-Riddle. Bethel (Ind.) College ranks first with 367 points.
Both USCB teams begin the spring season Feb. 8 at the Webber International Invitational in Lake Wales, Fla.
