Hilton Head Island players and coaches had a big hand in helping the SCISAA all-stars reclaim the Oasis Shrine Classic title from their North Carolina counterparts Friday.

The South Carolina squad earned a 27-16 victory in the annual all-star game in Charlotte.

Hilton Head Christian Academy's Tommy Lewis was the head coach for the South Carolina team, which won for the first time in three years. Eagles seniors Mark McDevitt and Joey Davis played a big role in the defensive effort, both starting at cornerback, and Hilton Head Preparatory School offensive lineman Ian Anderson also was on the South Carolina team.

SEAHAWKS HEAD UP

ALL-REGION SQUAD

Seven Hilton Head High players headline this fall's All-Region 8-AAA football team.

North-South all-star selection Ahmad Aiken, running back Marcus Green, offensive lineman Dylan Hannon, middle linebacker Kenny Anderson, quarterback Dominque Driessen, safety Octavius Logan and wide receiver Clifford Morrow were selected from the region champion Seahawks.

Battery Creek High School had four players make the team -- quarterback Antonio Wiggs, running back Tavaras Pinckney, linebacker Nigel Fripp and linebacker Norman Jenkins.

Bluffton High School linebacker Ethan Green and running back Timmy Smith rounded out the all-region squad.

HHH LONG SNAPPER HONORED

Hilton Head Island High School freshman Cory Cheadle won a regional long snapping competition at the Chris Sailor Kicking-Nike Long Snapping Camp in Atlanta on Nov. 23, qualifying him for the national competition Jan. 17-18 in Las Vegas.

The win also moved Cheadle to No. 5 in Chris Sailor Kicking's rankings of the top long snappers in the country for the class of 2012.

ALL-REGION VOLLEYBALL TEAM NAMED

Class 3-A player of the year Carly Ledbetter is among the all-region volleyball squad selections for Region 8-AAA.

Ledbetter is joined by Hilton Head High teammates Emily Natoli and Nysa Hicks, a setter and middle blocker for the Lower State champions, respectively.

Bluffton middle blocker Shay Peterson and libero Haley Sulka also were selected to the team.

PRESSING MATTERS

After Saturday's loss to Burke High School in the finals of the Mazzanna Lawn Care BC Classic, Battery Creek coach John Drafts knows what opposing teams will do to the Dolphins when they see how the Bulldogs earned the win.

It's going to be a heavy dose of press defense.

"We've got to work more on (breaking) the press," Drafts said.

Forward Brent Evans was limited by foul trouble for much of Saturday's loss, compounding the problems. The 6-foot-6 forward's length and ability to bring the ball up were missed as the Bulldogs' defense led to the Dolphins being outscored 44-21 in the second and third quarters.

BOUNCING BACK

Coach Wilbert Bryant's frustrations during Friday's game against Goose Creek High School were evident from the sidelines as the mistakes piled up in a 67-30 loss.

The next question was how would the Battery Creek girls basketball team react to the loss?

Bryant got the answer in a 68-62 win over Burke in the third-place game Saturday.

"We got the heart back," the coach said.

The best news for Bryant was the performance of two team leaders: Katrece Daniels on the perimeter and April Myers close to the basket.

Daniels finished with 36 points against the Lady Bulldogs, while Myers added 17.

"I was very proud of both of those young ladies," Bryant said.
